Time is running out for landlords to meet insulation requirements

Landlords may be leaving it too late to insulate their rentals in time for the 1 July 2019 deadline according to a report released by MBIE.

The Residential Tenancies Act (RTA) monitoring report indicates that although most landlords are aware of their responsibilities, many have not yet brought their rental properties up to standard. As of March 2018, an estimated 67 per cent of private rental properties met the standard, an increase of just 7 per cent since July 2016.

This report suggested that between 126,000 and 220,000 homes still required compliant insulation as at March 2018.

Under changes to the RTA made in 2016, all rental properties must have ceiling and underfloor insulation installed, wherever possible, to meet the required standard.

Tenancy Services has been working hard to inform landlords and tenants about the requirements since 2016.

“We are fast approaching the 1 July 2019 deadline, and time is running out for landlords to make their rental properties compliant,” Housing and Tenancy Services General Manager Steve Watson says.

“Industry organisations are telling us that there are more properties needing insulation than can be put in by qualified installers in the time still available.”

From 1 July 2019, MBIE’s Tenancy Compliance and Investigation Team will be focusing on compliance and enforcement of insulation requirements. There will be consequences for landlords who fail to comply in time, with exemplary damages of up to $4,000 per property.

“Landlords need to know they can’t afford to leave insulation until the last minute. If they don’t book the work in now, they could miss out altogether, and that will cost them,” says Mr Watson.

Autumn HomeXPO delights the crowds

An action packed weekend at Claudelands Event Centre saw just over 15,800 people attend the Waikato Show, an event which sees fifteen expos in one, with everything from home and lifesytle information to health and well-being advice. The jewel in the show crown and one of the 15 expos was the Autumn HomeXPO, which was consistently busy across the three days.

The Autumn HomeXPO, in it’s fourth year, featured a handpicked selection of quality exhibitors who provided a wide range of products and services. From Expert Flooring and House of Beds, to Rocker Chopper kitchen knives and Shimono vacuum cleaners, showgoers were treated to inspiration, advice, new ideas and one-off show specials.

Autumn HomeXPO Exhibition Director, Rebecca Hannah, says the show was a great success “we were really pleased with the response to the Autumn HomeXPO with people from all over the Waikato and Bay of Plenty visiting the show to find many new ideas and great prices for building and renovating projects.”

A survey conducted on show attendees revealed that landscaping and gardening upgrades to their properties in the next 12 months was the most popular reason for attending the show, followed closely by upgrading kitchens and bathrooms. With nearly half of all visitors intending to renovate in the next 12 months, the appetite for the Autumn HomeXPO was palatable.

Exhibitor Wayne Clifford from DVS said the overall atmosphere of the show was fantastic. “The boutique HomeXPO was intimate and successful for the visting adults and exhibitors. The rest of the Waikato Show provided something for everyone…I would highly recommend this show for creating a family friendly environment.”

The Autumn HomeXPO concluded with the Waikato Show Association’s inaugural show awards, a tribute to Graham Hannah, who created and organised the Waikato Home & Garden Show for the last 32 years. The awards recognise the massive contribution Hannah made to the events and exhibition industry in Waikato and throughout NZ.

A dozen awards were handed out, one for each pavillion within the Waikato Show. Judges Noel Gleeson, Waikato Show committee member, and Hamilton City Council Deputy Mayor Gordon Chesterman, found Wild Exposure to be the Best Exhibition Stand in the Autumn HomeXPO Pavilion, and My Republic the winner of the Overall Best Stand Award at the Waikato Show.

The Autumn HomeXPO returns in 2017 on 7-9 April.

The New Waikato Show

The weekend weather did not deter the 15,000 visitors to what Waikato Show organisers are calling their “best show yet.”

Over 15,000 people gathered at Claudelands Showground for three days of fun filled family activities and exciting expos.

“It rained down on Friday which was disappointing, but the weather made up for it on Saturday, it was gorgeously hot,” Waikato Show coordinator, Carina Dooley said.

The three day event was jam packed with 15 expos in one, with everything from home and lifestyle information to health and well-being advice.

Some of this year’s highlights included on stage entertainment and the inaugural Waikato Idol.

The winners of the Waikato Idol were Capri Mawston of the junior division, Adrienne Collier of the intermediate division, and Ashlee Fisher of the open division.

HomeXPO director Rebecca Hannah of Hannah & Associates said the show was a boomer. “We were very pleased with the response to the HomeXPO with people from all over the Waikato and Bay of Plenty visiting the show to find many new ideas and great prices for building and renovating projects.”

HomeXPO exhibitor Paul Chard from Gravity HQ said the overall atmosphere of the show was fantastic.

“It was a great show, our stand was really really busy. People who come to the show have a great time because it’s very interactive.”

Gravity HQ, who exhibit at 25 shows every year, say there was a lot more energy through the doors compared to other shows.

“People are much more willing to have a play and have fun, so it was a really fun atmosphere.”

Rock FM promotions coordinator Joel Skulander said the life-size foosball competition went really well.

“We gave away tonnes of prizes, including a Blu-Ray DVD player. “We look forward to being there again next year.”

The New Waikato Show, previously known to most locals as the Waikato Winter Show, has been an annual event since 1906.

This new format show is all about connecting with the community and providing an exciting platform to showcase what they do, how they do it, and why it’s so important to our region.
